What is Poly B Plumbing?

Poly B piping was a popular type of plastic plumbing pipe used in many Calgary homes from the late 1970s to the mid-1990s.

Poly B (Polybutylene) pipes (sometimes called “PB-1 piping systems”) were standard in Calgary homes built between the late 1970s and mid-1990s.

An estimated 148,000 homes across Alberta still have Poly B piping, and Calgary accounts for a large share, thanks to the city’s building boom in the ’80s and early ’90s.

It was inexpensive and easy to install, but later it was discovered that Poly B pipes are prone to leaks and breaks.

The problem is that manufacturers make Poly B piping systems using a plastic that can become brittle and crack over time, especially when exposed to chlorine in the water supply.

When they fail, the result is sudden: water damage, mould risk, and repair costs that far exceed the price of Poly B replacement.

If you have Poly B piping in your home, you should replace it with a more durable material, such as copper or PEX.

Signs It’s Time To Replace Poly B Plumbing

Not sure if your Poly B plumbing needs replacing? Here are some of the most common signs that it may be time to act.

Frequent or Recurring Leaks

Even small, occasional leaks can be a sign that your Poly B piping is breaking down internally. If you’ve had more than one leak in recent years, the system may be reaching the end of its usable life.

Home Built in Late-1970s to Mid-1990s

Builders commonly installed Poly B in Calgary homes during this era. If your home falls within this timeframe, there’s a strong chance your plumbing includes polybutylene piping.

Reduced Water Pressure

Deteriorating Poly B can restrict water flow over time. If you’ve noticed a gradual drop in water pressure, aging pipes may be to blame.

Discoloured Plastic Fittings

Poly B fittings that have turned yellow, brown, or appear cracked and brittle are visible indicators of degradation and a sign that the pipes themselves may not be far behind.

Poly B FAQ

How can I tell if my home has Poly B plumbing?

Poly B pipes are typically grey plastic tubing, sometimes stamped with “PB” or “Polybutylene.” You’ll often find them near your water heater, under sinks, or in your basement and utility rooms. The fittings may appear discoloured or brittle. If your home dates between the late 1970s and the mid-1990s, it’s more likely to have Poly B. A licensed plumber or home inspector can quickly confirm whether Poly B is present.

How much does it cost to replace Poly B plumbing in Calgary?

The cost varies depending on several factors, including the size of your home, the number of fixtures, accessibility of your existing plumbing, and the type of replacement material used. Because every home is different, the best way to get an accurate picture is to request a quote from a licensed plumber.

What is Poly B replaced with?

In most cases, plumbers replace Poly B with PEX (cross-linked polyethylene). PEX is more cost-effective than copper, highly durable, and has better freeze-resistance, an important consideration for Calgary’s climate. It also offers a lifespan of 40+ years, making it a reliable long-term solution.
